The general perception towards traveling on the continent is that travel within Africa is regionally biased.

It is more convenient for Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) citizens to travel within West Africa, Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) citizens within Central Africa, Southern African Development Community (SADC) within Southern Africa, East African Community (EAC) citizens within East Africa and Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) citizens in North Africa.

However, some countries and organisations are Pan-African in their approach toward travel and visa requirements for visitors from the continent. At present, Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda and Seychelles do not require a visa application before traveling on an African passport.

Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways and Asky Airlines are championing the movement of Africans beyond the regional blocs.

Of course, there would always be other challenges such as the cost of air tickets, connecting flights and its impact on travel duration amongst others. However, if the intention is to travel Africa, you can consider:

  • Traveling within your region

  • Seeking countries with little or no visa requirements

  • Road travels

Let's travel, experience the vast continent and rightfully tell our stories. It is (will be) sure worth it.

As an African, what are those travel barriers in Africa you hope to conquer?
